Thai common presumption about tourists.

This was posted on FB, and I'd be curious to hear some of your thoughts. Would be nice to see more Thai cultural discussions on here, and also get some Thais to give some insight. Thoughts? Topic: 1) Thai common presumption about tourists. I'm coming with an experimental idea about how or why do (pr...

Re: Why are kids failing at learning language?

I've asked for tones of words to many different Thais over the last few years, and not a single one was able to consistently get it right. It wasn't until I came to Thailand and started spending more time with people who learned English as a second language that I realized how little I actually know...

Re: Learning more than one language at once?

Certainly. But there have been many times where I learned a word, didn't use it for like a month so I didn't know it so well, but then saw it written somewhere and recognized it right away, especially using the context that it was written in. But like you said, I do agree it is better to build up a ...

Re: Thai or Lao? Let the debate begin

I'll move this topic to the "Thai Language" section.

Is the debate over which one people should learn, or what we call it - Thai dialects or Lao?

Re: Maintaining Fluency

I use Interpals (website) and HelloTalk (mobile app) to get into texting/chatting conversations one and one with natives. You can also find places to hire tutors via Skype to do remote Skype sessions and practice your speech. Aside from that, the ones you listed above cover most of what I can think ...

Re: Learning more than one language at once?

Good advice. Retaining is certainly more important. I've found learning 50 words/day and retaining them is very doable, as long as I am actively using them as I study.

Stuart Jay Raj on Talking Thailand

I've enjoyed watching Talking Thailand, which is a mostly English show that discusses random topics in Thailand. This episode has Stuart on just talking about general language. I've enjoyed a lot of his videos, and found this one good.

Any else like watching his stuff?

Re: If not Thai, what language?

I've had the opposite experience as you regarding speaking Thai - I've found the Thais to be incredibly encouraging. There have been cases when they switched to English (no, not so much - but it does happen). If that happens, I still ask how to say the particular word and my interlocutor has always...

Re: Learning more than one language at once?

If I'm by myself, I focus purely on reading/writing for vocabulary building and grammar structure practice. As for speaking... Lao - when I go to Laos, I'll try it out :) Thai - everyday here in Thailand Burmese - I'm just trying to get a feel for the language - this is slow going and my schedule i...
