My name is Tod Daniels. I've been living in thailand 10+ years now and been studying thai for the last 7 years. I am a guest writer on my friend Catherine Wentworth's website "Women Learn Thai".

I review thai language schools in Bangkok, write about my trials and tribulations learning this oh-so difficult language, and also do the occasional book review as well.

I've toured or sat sample classes at over 20 thai language schools in Bangkok and written reviews about a fair number of them.. I honestly started reviewing them because there was nothing out on the inter-web about the various schools, the methods used, etc. It just turned into a series of reviews which Catherine was gracious enough to post for me. I hope people looking to study thai will go to her site, she's got a TON of free resources cataloged, and my reviews might be helpful if you're looking for a good thai language school..

I think this forum will become a valuable resource for people interested in and studying the thai language. Unfortunately I don't "play" on facebook, so this is the only avenue I have to put my voice out there. I look forward to this forum growing and being place we can all come and learn the language together.

Oh, I'm just a dumb hillbilly from Ohio, so I know if I can learn to speak/understand, read/type this language that anyone who really wants to can as well.

Hi Tod, welcome. What part of Thailand do you live in?

As for language schools: lately it seems the gov't is cracking down on people abusing the system. Lots of people enrolling in the schools for a visa, but never attending class. It seems most of Walen is like that. What do you think the gov't will do about this? They recently doubled the number of required hours, but that doesn't seem like it will do much since they can fake logs anyways (and they already do).

As far as the schools and ED visas;
For a long time the ED visa for studying thai was an easy relatively cheap way for foreigners to stay here long term. It was especially attractive for people who didn't "fit" into the available visa categories; married, working, supporting children, volunteering or retired.

Interestingly enough the Ministry of Education which really wrote the regulation on how many hours you need to study thai to get an ED visa hasn't increased it from the 16 hours a calendar month or like the schools say "4 hours a week".. That rule is still the same.

Different Thai Embassies around the world have their own criteria about how many hours the paperwork must show from your school for them to issue you an ED visa. Inside the country different immigrations offices do as well. Still the official regulation is 4 hours a week, although it comes down to what ever the immigrations office you're dealing with requires because those places are little fiefdoms of their own..

The changes to the Police Order for Immigrations which happened on Aug 29 concerning ED visas states that you can only get 90 day extensions of stay on an ED visa for one year. Then you go out of the country get another ED visa and do the 90 day extensions again for a year.

It used to be you could get up to three years worth of 90 day extensions on one visa, after being tested at the Ministry of Education each year. Now the MOE is out of the loop other than issuing the paperwork that your school requests.. Immigrations is doing their own "spot testing" to make sure people are indeed studying or making an effort.

You are correct, until they come up with fingerprint scanners for every school, making students check in that way, records, documents can and will be faked.

What this has done is put unfair scrutiny on the people sincerely studying thai because of a few bad people...

A few bad people? I get the impression the vast majority of people who enroll in language schools do it for the visa. Do you have any numbers on this? I hear stories all the time of people going to class and see like 10-20 people, when the school has like 500 enrolled.

One reason so many people do this is because of the flawed visa system - getting a work permit and/or registering a business here isn't easy (though it should be), so people resort to other visas that aren't quite what they want or need.
